ABSTRACT

A Value Chain Analysis (VCA) was undertaken in Cape Verde in 2008 as a part of a larger study examining many aspects of tourism to make recommendations on a programme of interventions to improve its development impact. Talking about the starting point value chain, the theory of technical polarization, well-known in regional economic science, is never far away. The chapter deals with the possible options for a good strategy for regional development. It describes that sustainable development is a crucial option with respect to tourism. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNWTO) diagram in the publication Sustainable Tourism for Development illustrates the tourism value chain and the range of services and goods directly and indirectly related to tourism demand. A good strategy implies knowing where we are, where we want to be in five or ten years and knowing how to get there.
