ABSTRACT

The modern engineer has a wide variety of effects to choose from while mixing his or her track. On a mixing console all tracks are routed to the master fader. Busing takes the desired tracks and routes them to a different set of faders called bus faders. On both digital audio workstations and hardware mixing consoles, the pan control will usually be located somewhere on each channel strip – typically near the level fader. Dynamic-based effects include compressors, limiters, expanders, and gates. It is important to dive further into each of these effects to understand how to incorporate them into a mix. The attack setting on a compressor tells the compressor just how fast to start compressing once a signal has passed the threshold. In mixing, engineers will oftentimes place gates on individual drum mics in order to reduce bleed from other drums, which, in turn, effectively isolates the individual drum.
