ABSTRACT

The three elements that encompass music are: rhythm, melody, and harmony. Rhythm is defined as motion in music or “movement marked by the regulated succession of strong or weak elements”. The term beat means simple means continuous pulse. Modern definitions of the term beat have come to mean entire complex rhythmic patterns – what some musicians would call “grove.” Melody is pitch arranged in time, or a series of tones that create a musical statement. The layout of the piano keyboard is one of the most important visual tools for understanding theoretical music concepts. The five accidentals used in music notation are: sharp, flat, natural, double sharp, and double flat. Understanding the construction of the major scale is one of the most important concepts when it comes to learning music theory. Music theory is abstract without the understanding of the major scale.
