ABSTRACT

The impact of a substance use disorder on a couple can negatively impact their relationship in various ways. Due to the individual nature of a substance use disorder diagnosis, the non-using partner is often brought into the treatment process to “assist” the using partner. This limited approach to treatment neglects consideration of the couple as a unit. The couple’s relationship both impacts and is impacted by the substance use disorder. The following chapter presents a case and treatment recommendations for working with couples impacted by substance use disorders.
