ABSTRACT

Domestic violence continues to be narrowly defined as physical violence only affecting women. Competent assessment and treatment of various forms of abuse begin with a foundational understanding of domestic violence. Although couples counseling is not appropriate when abuse is occurring within the current relationship, it is appropriate when a history of domestic violence is or has been present. This chapter will highlight common forms of domestic violence, how it impacts couples, the complex psychological effects on survivors, and relevant DSM 5 diagnoses to consider. Recommendations for treatment will be presented along with a case study to demonstrate these concepts.
