ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a taxonomy of spiritual and religious problems that can impact couples using a relational spirituality model. A clinical case study is used to conceptualize spirituality dynamics at the levels of both individual development and couple functioning. Attachment and differentiation are employed as key developmental factors along with cultural considerations in assessment and the therapy process. Through applications to this clinical case, we summarize our approach to couple therapy, which follows an iterative process moving through phases of: (1) forming an attachment; (2) co-constructing a developmental crucible; (3) processing disappointment and grief; and (4) cultivating and extending differentiation.
