ABSTRACT

Psychosis can be a perplexing and problematic presentation in couple therapy. This chapter emphasizes psychotic reactions in Bipolar Disorder or Major Depressive Disorder and in Schizophrenia or Delusional Disorder. It begins with a (1) brief overview of theory and neuroscience research on psychosis; (2) DSM-5 considerations; (3) assessment and case conceptualization of partners and their relationship; (4) cultural considerations; and (5) two case examples with individual and couple case conceptualization as well as treatment considerations.
