ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses two detailed Problem-Based Learning (PBL) approaches, the process of helping students develop strategies to teach music in the special education classroom, from behavior management for students with disabilities to curricular design for including music in the high school. It explores the two areas that most public school teachers report difficulties in when working with students with disabilities are classroom management and curricular design for students in self-contained classrooms. At the end of the week, students reported their research findings. Each group was asked to describe the strategies that they thought would be most effective to address the most common behavioral issues. Most music educators struggle with this aspect of curricular planning, as they're unsure of how to accommodate the students while providing a music curriculum that is both relevant and cognizant of the students' educational needs.
