ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the notion of Project-based learning within a broader context as well as situate it within the Higher Education music classroom. The role of music in the context of what is called arts integration in teaching and learning is extensive and holds great potential for students as learners, and for teachers, in engaging students. Arts Integration takes many forms, from learning through the arts, to learning with arts, to making art, and to reviewing and evaluating art. Learning in and about music includes learning "how tos" – skills and techniques such as scales, intonation, and dynamics. Learning music by focusing in on it as a discipline onto itself is the essence of music education. According to state and federal educational guidelines – each and every child is required to have an education in and about the arts.
