ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a case study that intends to empower the teacher educator and student teacher to understand the extraordinary power of data. It utilizes a values dilemma to address issues of information and data literacy, not as abstracts or concepts from the computer science domain, but as foundational literacies for a full understanding of how we connect with technologies in contemporary society and in everyday social interaction. The issues arising in contemporary society focus on hours of screen time and access to devices for young people. Information and data literacy is a critical competence in order for citizens and students to operate safely and well within the knowledge society. Whether having knowledge of the concept of data rights, around the issue of consent for data use, or indeed to the foundational issue of information literacy enabling ethical research and discovery, this is a critical digital competence.
