ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the social landscape more broadly and examines how values-based approaches can usefully shape young people’s practice across a number of contexts. It discusses the complex social landscapes of young people in contemporary society, noting the significance of hybrid spaces, and the challenges presented when navigating borderland areas. The chapter also considers the role of values within education for digital well-being and argues the need for educators to support young people in developing a ‘values compass’ that can support them as they navigate through their social landscapes and encounter various values dilemmas. As digital spaces have increasingly become a fundamental part of young people’s social lives, it is argued that many experience online and offline social worlds as ‘mutually constituted’. In digital spaces, performance no longer relies on the co-presence of actors and the observing audience. The relevance of social capital within digital spaces is interesting to consider and is worthy of some further discussion.
