ABSTRACT

This chapter establishes a general picture of the development of the Mercers' pageant waggon, and looks more closely at certain parts of the evidence, following in the footsteps of Sandy Johnston and Margaret Dorrell. It presents several examples which show the view looking down at the 'brandreth' through the hole in the waggon roof through which God ascends. The iron-frame 'heuen' is four feet wide up to a height of four feet, which should enable the seated actor to rise floor level and without too much difficulty step off on to the waggon roof and show the 'heuen' from the side and the 'heuen' from the front. It also gives an idea of the structure of the whole waggon with 'heuen' and 'helle mouthe' in position and the judgment seat suspended between.
