ABSTRACT

In Chapter 2, the authors focus on getting to know your students and the importance of their language skills and educational backgrounds. You are introduced to a classroom teacher (Ms. Casad) and her four Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students. She first looks at their cumulative files to complete Student Profile forms to gather a comprehensive picture of their strengths. She also sends home an About Me survey to gather information on their cultural assets. The authors introduce you to language acquisition stages, language assessment, and English Language Development (ELD) programs that offer different types of services and instruction for ELL (English Language Learner) students.
