ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 focuses on general education teachers’ roles in the implementation of culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) in the classroom, an important foundation for CLD/ELLs’ success. Examples of CRP are provided as readers view the process whereby Ms. Casad designs lessons that build on students’ cultural assets in the fourth grade Oregon Trail unit.

She implements CRP by: (1) connecting the pioneers’ journey to students’ immigrant journeys; (2) building positive relationships with students including developing empathy; (3) encouraging Rosa, César, and Jun to speak and read in their native languages; (4) utilizing kinesthetic learning styles to “walk” the Oregon Trail on a floor map; (5) including Chinese and American Indian perspectives on the Oregon Trail; and (6) performing Intentional Reflection. Place-based education and multiple perspectives are also discussed.
