ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 focuses on the social and emotional factors affecting Culturally and Linguistically Diverse students’ identities and language development. These are particularly important for ELLs who have faced obstacles in coming to the U.S., because resulting behaviors can appear similar to those of students experiencing Emotional Behavioral Disorder, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Authors introduce you to many activities that help ELLs’ successful acculturation process. Ms. Casad also learns the importance of collaboration with colleagues and parents for students’ healthy social and emotional development, necessary for creating resilient self-concepts, esteem, and identities.
