ABSTRACT

The Professional Learning Community team changes to a Student Study Team as additional expertise is needed to assess student response to (1) interventions and (2) formal and informal assessments (e.g., Functional Behavior Assessment, Portfolios, Self-Assessments, language acquisition assessments). The team’s goal is to view student responses through a holistic lens (i.e., cultural, linguistic, socioemotional, and cognitive), to decide if learning and behavior problems are primarily due to (1) language learning and cultural factors or (2) a disabling condition. The team decided that Rosa’s challenges are due to cultural factors, and she is making adequate progress to interventions; however, she needs support to maintain academic success and navigating complex identities within the acculturation process. Jun requires more evidence (e.g., additional interventions and time to respond) to determine he has had adequate opportunities to learn, before determining learning challenges are due to internal or external causes.
