ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the general education teacher's role in the referral process for determining differences from disabilities among culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD)/English Language Learner (ELL) students. The general education teacher's role in accurately implementing this process is crucial for providing the best services and opportunities for CLD/ELL students. Collaboration helps with finding important data about the students that one individual may not be aware of. Specialists can help with reviewing cumulative files to explain the many perspectives on students' lives when developing the Holistic Student Profile. Based on data collected for Jun, the Student Study Team could have decided a referral to special education services for any of the following categories, Specific Learning Disability, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or possibly Autism. Jun displayed several characteristics in all of these categories. However, referring him before the entire process was completed would have been based on insufficient data.
