ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some key principles of writing pedagogy and effective assignment design while also highlighting relationships between writing and a global perspective. Learning to write academic English successfully is a long-term project for all, regardless of cultural or educational backgrounds. Even proficient writers often face setbacks when introduced to unfamiliar genres. There are a number of important differences between writing in a first language and writing in a second/additional language. When people write in a second language, it takes them much more time to generate text and their writing is typically judged to be less successful than the writing of native speakers. After working to design effective assignments, there are few things more disheartening to faculty than identifying plagiarism. Although there is no way to eliminate plagiarism, there are strategies that make it more difficult for students to plagiarize and to encourage them to do the work instead of taking shortcuts.
