ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 presents a method for creating visible knowledge in the form of trade-off and limit curves supported with a tool for documenting the curves along with the process and thinking behind them. The tool is a one-page report template consisting of an issue statement, system illustration, causal analysis, characteristic curves, and countermeasures. The five-step method basically follows the template, with iteration: 1) State the issue, 2) Draw a picture, 3) Create a causal diagram, 4) Find data and create curves, 5) Develop countermeasures. The method is demonstrated through a detailed example of developing a trade-off curve sheet for one failure mode of a pressure tank.
