ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 is an addition to the original Allen Ward manuscript, which discusses a series of issues related to the practical application of visible knowledge. First, the mindset of visible knowledge, even without the detailed methods described in earlier chapters, can alter thinking in positive ways and extend it beyond technical problems. Second, it is possible to build knowledge from existing data, experienced employees, and designed experiments in addition to systems analysis. Third, visible knowledge can enhance collaboration across disciplinary or functional boundaries within an organization by giving management or development teams a platform for understanding trade-offs for the good of the whole organization. The importance of how knowledge is presented is discussed, as are a number of issues related to leadership. Throughout the chapter, discussions are grounded in real-life examples which lend greater insight and practicality for the reader.
