ABSTRACT

Contextualized in Australia, Kaye Colmer’s conceptual ideas are presented alongside evidence garnered from the reality of the workplace. In her chapter, Kaye targets the central theme of interconnected systemic elements of leadership and practice, aiming to explain the reciprocal relationship between collective professional learning and leadership in early childhood education. The deliberate creation of an environment where professional learning is organized, systematic, collective, and ongoing is emphasized. This concept of a professional learning environment inspires us to consider our personal experience and ask: What professional development opportunities are available in my community for a new teacher? For an experienced teacher? How can I support staff in their professional learning? What alternative approaches to professional learning may suit my context?
