ABSTRACT

The current environmental crisis begs us to rethink the frontiers of natural resource conflicts. Soils are exhausted and poisoned, species are extinct, forests recede and vital natural resources are privatised and enclosed, while wealth is accumulated by powerful actors. We know that it can no longer be ‘business as usual’. Change is desperately needed, but where do we find the alternatives in today’s world? In this chapter we look not only at conflict, but also at moods of resistance, the need for hope, and possible ways forward. The chapter concludes that while there are few concrete solutions there is an array of diverse actions and processes at local scales that provide hope and might function as radical seeds for more consistent changes on a global scale in the future.
