ABSTRACT

To include sustainability and social responsibility in management education requires a change in perspective and practice. In ten years, just eighteen of Canada’s academic institutions committed to follow the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) and report on their efforts to integrate/implement the principles. This low number of signatories compelled the chapter’s authors to research utilization and effectiveness of the PRME within Canadian academic institutions. The PRME are most often embedded into specific academic programs and external stakeholder initiatives, but not into the entire institution. Effective integration of the PRME into curricula depends on the knowledge and dedication of faculty: simply incorporating sustainability into curricula is insufficient. The most significant barrier in Canada appears to be a lack of awareness and understanding among faculty. We conclude that signatory schools may be better at integrating the PRME into their institutions than non-signatories due to signatories’ awareness of its resources and benefits.
