ABSTRACT

Because of the lack of past experience and the limited number of management-oriented sustainability education programmes, universities and business schools now face a challenge to incorporate sustainability into their curricula to satisfy the growing demand of business communities and various other stakeholders for such programmes. This chapter demonstrates how an undergraduate accounting degree programme of a state university in Sri Lanka has successfully developed students’ competencies in sustainability. Though this university is not a signatory to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), the approach used in this course is well aligned with its principles. The chapter describes how the state university introduced a novel course on sustainability accounting to develop students’ sustainability competencies under three main themes: course design, delivery and evaluation. The chapter also discusses the challenges encountered and the strategies adopted to overcome them.
