ABSTRACT

Who we are as individuals is a cultural construct which is socialized from a very early age. This chapter highlights the important role that culture plays in shaping and maintaining our self-concepts and identity and influencing our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Other core elements of the self include gender, religious identity, social class, sexuality, disability, and weight. Chapter 3 considers identity development models, social identity frameworks, bicultural and multicultural identity, indigenous and multicultural personalities, and concepts related to gender. Given the threats of terrorism around the globe, the ‘And So Forth’ section questions whether there is a terrorist personality.
