ABSTRACT

Society’s response to the challenges faced by climate change has resulted in the creation of new types of jobs that are colloquially known as “green jobs.” This chapter explores and highlights the human factors and ergonomics issues of green jobs. The enormous range of emergent green jobs is too large for an exhaustive coverage. In this chapter, we look at the three green job sectors that are likely to result in the greatest job creation over the next decade: jobs in the renewable energy sector, jobs in recycling and waste management, and jobs in green agriculture. In particular, we look at the human factors and ergonomics implications in the design of work, the implementation of work, and the maintenance of work. We conclude with some comments about cross-cutting human factors and ergonomics concerns where climate change (and climate extremes in particular) is likely to have a significant impact on most jobs.
