ABSTRACT

The four-dimensional model of education is applied to whole-school practice and policy, starting by considering the importance of clarity, commitment and culture. Working together requires consensus, consideration, consistency and good communication. Both tradition and innovation make a contribution in the drive to achieve heights of excellence. Breadth of attainment is fostered through the cultivation of ambition, keeping track of achievements and the celebration of success across all parts of a school. In ensuring depth of engagement, it is essential to care and cater for the entirety of the ability range, considering the significant challenges this entails, particularly at the extremes. The link between happiness and learning, if the foundations are to be successfully laid for a life-time of learning, is considered, together with the place of the home–chool partnership and cultivating a love of learning.
