ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the grounding of the MV Rena in the Bay of Plenty in 2011. It focuses on impacts on, and views from, one Ma-ori community from Motiti, the island closest to the Astrolabe Reef, upon which the Rena floundered. It is coauthored by a Ma-ori/Indigenous academic and a non-Ma-ori, community activist with close links to these Ma-ori communities. The case draws on the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the UN Global Compact to inform analysis of the events, and responses from government and business. Further, it informs the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) by providing an Indigenous perspective on an event with local, national, and global implications.
