ABSTRACT

Am I a ‘non-white’? Before I was invited to contribute to this symposium, I had never seriously asked myself that question. Even now, when I have been faced with it, I can only say that I know I am somewhere near the borderline, but it is the borderline that I find most difficult to draw. Even after cautioning myself that in this area it is tempting to half-close one’s eyes to what may threaten one’s defensive illusions and rationalisations, I must say that I honestly do not think I care.
