ABSTRACT

It may come as a surprise to those who are unfamiliar with the processes associated with social services to know that an adult with a life-long disability does not maintain a social worker indefinitely. Many people with brain injury experience ongoing memory difficulties. This is one of the most common, and most well-known, symptoms of a head injury. Advocacy is a human right. Anyone who feels in anyway unable to represent themselves alone, or simply wants some moral support, is entitled to advocacy, a fundamental right under the 2014 Care Act. Furthermore, advocacy only works if the health and social care professionals on the other side of the interaction ‘buy into it’ in full. Being able to articulate oneself clearly and intelligently, and be able to demonstrate one’s intelligence, often leads to the assumption that an individual is not as ‘disabled’ as suggested by those around them.
