ABSTRACT

The intersection of clinical supervision, sexuality concerns of clients, and LGBTQ issues is a new and largely unexplored terrain. This chapter examines the unique challenges involved in supervising a therapist whose LGBTQ clients are seeking support or direction in their sexual lives. Supervisors must consider appropriate theoretical frameworks that honor the lived experience of LGBTQ clients, the adoption of a multicultural and diversity-focused lens, the assessment of a supervisee’s knowledge base of LGBTQ populations, and the assessment of a supervisee’s competence in intervention and treatment planning. In addition, the supervisor must pay considerable attention to the actual process of supervision in the consultation room. Several case studies will highlight the process of contextually sensitive, theoretically sound, and LGBTQ-affirmative supervision.
