ABSTRACT
This chapter considers the interesting, ongoing social phenomenon of mixed marriages between men from Serbia and women from Albania. These marriages, most often arranged through a mediator, are growing in numbers and usually involve Serbian men and Albanian women from rural, mountainous areas. Although based on fieldwork in the Sandžak region, the phenomenon considered in this chapter is broader than these geographic and territorial limits. This chapter tackles the relationship between patriarchy and nationalism, inasmuch as these marriages show that Serbian men choose to intermarry with Albanians despite prejudices and hostilities between them, rather than stay unmarried and childless.
