Chapter 5 draws upon military records to show how public violence broke out throughout Aceh’s districts following Djuarsa’s coordination tour from 7 October. This violence began as demonstrations that marched on PKI houses and offices. These houses and offices were often burnt down. Individuals suspected of being connected to the PKI who were discovered during these demonstrations were regularly killed directly in the street, or taken to death houses where they were killed and their bodies then dumped in the street. The military recorded these public killings on a “death map”. Other individuals suspected of being connected to the PKI were “arrested” and handed over to the military, leading to the creation of a substantial prison population in the province.
