ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the rule of law in developing countries and the role played by various Western countries and donor agencies who advocate the rule of law promotion. It discusses the various strategies of Western countries to promote the rule of law reform and the problems associated with those strategies that are being used in developing countries. The chapter deals with the rule of law scenario in Bangladesh. The promotion of the rule of law concept in many developing countries by other Western countries, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and prominent financial institutions has been a fad over the last three decades. The legal services provided by the NGOs and the Civil Society groups can outlast the appointments of government personnel heading and staffing many government agencies. This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book.
