ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 details the important contributions to combined arms warfare of the Theban generals Epaminondas and Pelopidas made famous by their victories at Leuctra, Cynoscephalae, and Mantineia. These battles are discussed in detail arguing the crucial importance of both the oblique formation and elite heavy infantry unit in changing infantry tactics coupled with the integration of an offensive use of heavy cavalry in Greek warfare for the first time. It also focuses as much as the limited sources allow on the undervalued importance of Jason of Pherae to the development of combined arms warfare in Greece. Had he not been assassinated, Jason would likely have had the army and ability to take over Greece and more. Though a shorter chapter it is crucial for introducing heavy cavalry into Greek warfare to complete the basic level of implementation of combined arms.
