ABSTRACT

Water Footprints can be disaggregated into different components. Water Footprints can be split into direct or indirect components; and internal or external use. In the case of businesses, direct water use would include all the water used on site in factory or office locations owned and operated by the company, whether supplied by a utility or sourced from dedicated pumps or boreholes. The indirect Water Footprint of a business will include the water that was used to produce all the raw materials in the manufacturing process, the construction of buildings, the manufacture of equipment and the fuel and energy which powers factories, offices and vehicles throughout corporate sustainability professionals supply chain. Water Footprints can also be broken into two broad types, or colours, of water use: blue or green. Green water refers to soil moisture used by rain-fed crops. Blue water refers to surface waters, such as rivers or lakes, and groundwater in the form of aquifers.
