ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at how to use 80/20 thinking to identify the most effective solutions in waste minimization, energy efficiency, water conservation and transport. In manufacturing, the most expensive and environmentally damaging place to create waste is at the end of the production process. In all cases the economic value and environmental impact embedded into the product was at its maximum when it was wasted. A careful analysis of consumption patterns, along with some experience and common sense, can flag up where efforts will have maximum impact. LED lighting represents another brilliant quick win, reducing energy use by a factor of six in some trials. Yes, it requires investment, but the return on investment is swift and the carbon reductions are quite remarkable. Checking water consumption during downtime will give an idea of the scale of the problem. An ultrasonic detector can help identify leaks in awkward places such as underground.
