ABSTRACT

Water risks can affect a company at every level, though it may take quite some time before this becomes common knowledge. Water stewardship can be considered as actions by water users themselves to contribute to the management of the shared resource towards public good outcomes. If companies were spending the time to map the water stewardship landscape and settle on where their risk issues were, then there would be less confusion. A framework should be seen as an evolving engagement with water stewardship. Career water professionals water strategy should, over time, help the company shift from an internal management focus to one of external water stewardship and either align or collide with societal and environmental concerns. The degree to which the outcomes of the water strategy are linked to operational activities, as well as the uptake of water risk indicators in corporate risk monitoring systems ultimately influences whether water risk is effectively mitigated.
