ABSTRACT

Many practitioners want to know where they can direct their effort. This chapter explores how they tip, the role different actors play, and how to support actors to build relationships that cultivate change. It provides some of the key theories and models that different system change practitioners use. System change or a transition can occur in many different ways. New niches, such as organic food, demonstrate viable alternatives to the mainstream. This can lead mainstream retailers to adjust their behaviour and adopt these niche practices. These innovations, technologies or businesses can either offer a new way to fulfil our needs or replace one that already exists. Wider landscape changes can put pressure on the mainstream to make changes. The coordinators play a critical role in cultivating a community of practice. The chapter highlights a number of strategies that illuminate what it might mean to make real a living systems perspective.
