ABSTRACT

After getting the energy consumption down to the lowest responsible level which can support the business, the next job for a small enterprise is to ensure that the sources of energy are as sustainable as possible. This chapter concentrates on making the outside energy supplies as green as possible. This involves fuel switching, buying green power, and purchase of renewable power under bilateral contracts directly with one or more renewable energy generators. The fuel switching option can cover pure bio-ethanol and bio-diesel fuels for a vehicle’s internal combustion engine and electric vehicles using renewable recharging facilities, such as solar carports. The selling of so-called green power to customers is an accounting, rather than a physical, transaction. Suppliers offering renewable electricity are effectively undertaking to procure the relevant proportion of their electricity sales from renewable sources.
