ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the renewable electricity generation. There is a surprising range of different technologies for the sustainable generation of electricity. Conductors, usually on the front and back surfaces, collect these charges and transport them to output cables to deliver power from the solar modules. The output voltage is a property of the materials themselves and remains fairly stable, so solar modules are designed with a number of interconnected cells to meet the output voltage required. The use of wind power in the UK has grown substantially in recent years, and this produces more energy output than any other elemental renewable source. Wind turbines typically deliver their output in the form of alternating current, and are designed to synchronise with the grid either directly or through power conditioning equipment. Solar and wind power, on the other hand, are inherently variable, delivering power only during daylight or when the wind is blowing.
