ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the state of sustainability reporting and introduce the Global Reporting Initiative, examines the state of small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) reporting and transparency and explores the trends that are driving even greater transparency from SMEs. The Sustainability Report may come in different shapes, sizes and formats, including print or wholly online versions. Global reporting initiative has pioneered and developed a comprehensive Sustainability Reporting Framework that is widely used around the world. Specifically, the recommended content includes: information about the company and its approach to sustainability management; its core policies, procedures, processes, and a set of qualitative and quantitative performance disclosures covering different aspects of sustainability impacts. The advantage of the United Nations Global Compact Communication on Progress is that it enables companies to focus on the good work they are doing in sustainability terms, without the rigorous requirement of a set of specific performance indicators.
