ABSTRACT

Leaders can adopt green behaviour in their personal life by, for example, cycling to work, installing solar panels at home, or leading a group of volunteers to dig a pond. Mistakes that can damage personal reputation range from leaving lights on to turning up in a gas-guzzling company car. There are two parts of such inspiring leadership – words and actions – and the two must match. The standard guerrilla approach is to get a team of enthusiasts together, then use Green Jujitsu techniques to build up enough projects to demonstrate to the leadership that sustainability is in the interest of the organisation. Many organisations have a very strong formalised company culture. Consistency is a key factor in determining trust, so all business decisions must be as consistent as possible with the green commitment. Probably the most important factor in working with the elephant is trust.
