ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a few basic definitions of common terms used in gamification theory such as social games, games mechanics and game design. The elements of game design are the true building blocks of a game, and they come together to form the gameplay and the mechanics/rules and give any particular game its unique character and feel. Leader boards, or some other visual way of displaying the 'state of play' and the relative positions of the players/teams is useful for keeping people's interest and momentum up. A well designed gamification intervention should have a number of levels or attainment stages to ensure enthusiasm and interest is maintained over time. Following on from the idea of 'rewards', the achieving of certain levels, and tasks, are often recognised with an achievement badge. Similarly to rewards, the expending of effort and the achievement of certain tasks, or milestones can lead to the earning of credits and/or points.
