ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the ideas behind gamification, considers building blocks of what it contains and looks at some examples of how it is playing out in the sustainability sector in the early stage of its evolution. The chapter also looks at how companies could potentially use the concept and techniques to create their own gamified projects. It also considers a company-wide employee engagement project with the aim of reducing the total amount of waste and recycling thrown out by an office-based organisation over a specified period of time. The working in teams to achieve the reduction needed and gain money for a chosen charity will be the hook for the Socialisers in the team, as well as the final challenge of getting everyone to work together to produce zero waste. The explorers will respond to the competition of creating new and innovative ways of reducing the waste arising and re-using resources in novel ways.
