DO YOU REMEMBER THE ‘GREEN POLICE’? Those champions of all

things environmental who harangued colleagues about the power settings

on their computers, kept an eye out for rogue single-sided printing, and

interrogated visitors about their transport arrangements? (You’ll definitely

remember them if you ever tried to arrive for a meeting by car.)

Too many of us have had brushes with the ‘old’ type of sustainability

champion, put in place when corporate responsibility was all about

changing small behaviours in the office. Those champions had their

place – but now that sustainability is about transforming the business,

it’s time for a new type of champion: one who has a good understanding

of the sustainability agenda, who knows how to influence and inspire,

and who is empowered to make real decisions.
