ABSTRACT

Microsoft hired Rob Bernard as their Chief Environmental Strategist when they decided to tackle sustainability. Rob took a three-fold approach, first with the low hanging fruit by reducing energy on their campus. Energy consumption is tied to the gross national product, which is a measure of how much a nation produces per year. The Energy Information Administration estimates that over 6.5 million barrels of oil are consumed each day in the US. About 95% of transportation in the USA is fueled by petroleum products. Work with local agencies and nonprofits to manage the impact the company has on the environment. Walmart set out to reduce its environmental footprint in the late 1990s. It created a scorecard for their suppliers. There are three ways to measure compliance with environmental laws and regulations: violations not documented by an agency, violations that receive a notice of violation (NOV), and fines or other sanctions for non-compliance.
