ABSTRACT

Conflict diamonds are diamonds that come from war zones where there is no rule of law. Other human rights abuses from diamond conflicts include forced labor, dangerous working conditions, and cruel treatment of workers and their families. Ben Bridge Jewelry works with miners and other jewelers at the source to help install processes that strengthen human rights and environmental protection. The International Labor Organization (ILO) began an international programme on the elimination of child labor in 1992. The ILO estimates there were 218 million children working worldwide in 2004, with over half in the worst forms of child labor — slavery, armed forces, prostitution, and drug trafficking. Senda Athletics distinguishes its soccer equipment on the basis that it is free of child labor and unfair working conditions along the entire supply chain. Forced labor is defined by the ILO as working under menace of an involuntary penalty.
