ABSTRACT

Packaging comes in many shapes and forms: boxes, bags, cans, foam pellets, shrink wrap, tubes, and paper. The purpose of packaging is to protect a product and keep it fresh. Additional benefits include enhanced attractiveness and protection from tampering. The improved milk jug is another good packaging improvement example embraced. The new package is more cube-shaped, which lowers packaging expenses by 10-20 cents per container. Square jugs also store 50% more milk per square metre so more milk can be put on trucks, which reduces trips and fuel costs. Since packaging produces a substantial amount of waste, and waste is always a sign of wasted money, reducing packaging material is a good way for a business to decrease its expenses. The company also decreased the thickness of the caps on 2 litre bottles of carbonated drinks, which saves 603 tons of plastic a year. And lightweight wine bottles now reduce glass usage by 560 tons.
