ABSTRACT

DISTRI was created in 1996 by the manager of another clothing brand for adults, who decided to quit his job at the company he worked for and create his own clothing firm for kids. The huge number of people who are willing to work tend to keep wages at too low a level for one or two workers to provide for a whole family, thus forcing children to work. The French distribution sector has been the target of much criticism and public denunciation since 1995, in particular from a social activist organization which includes trade unions and nongovernmental organizations under the name "Collectif Ethique sur etiquette". These denunciations were intended to force distributors to admit their responsibility in the poor social and environmental conditions under which their suppliers found themselves. In 2002, the name of DISTRI appeared on the list of the Burma Campaign, an NGO listing companies having commercial and financial relations with Burma.
